Dr. Carolyn Ghazal Dental Assistant Scholarship

Sonia Olla Ameh – Ross Medical Education

Sonia was a recipient of the Dr. Carolyn Ghazal Dental Assistant scholarship in in March of 2024.
Hear a bit more of Sonia’s journey in her own words:

“Embracing a career in dental assisting holds a profoundly personal significance for me, rooted
in my own transformative experience with oral healthcare. Dental assisting became my chosen
path because I wanted to be the person who supports others on their journey to confidence
and self-acceptance. This career not only allows me to provide hands-on assistance but also
enables me to create a positive, comfortable environment for patients, ensuring they feel
valued and understood.

I applied for this scholarship because I wanted help to reduce having to worry about fees
because I pay all of my school fees myself. I knew that applying for this would lighten the
weight. Receiving this scholarship gives me hope that I can do whatever I put my mind to,
reassuring me that I am on the right path to becoming a dental assistant and helping my
community in any way I can.”

Dental assistants (DAs) are vital to the daily operation of dental offices; they allow dentists to
see more people each day and ensure a positive experience for patients. But dental offices are
facing a nationwide shortage of DAs, which ultimately makes quality dental care less accessible.
That’s why the Pacific Dental Services Foundation created a scholarship program to provide
students with financial help to launch their careers.

Named after Dr. Carolyn Ghazal and her heart for service, the scholarship aims to mold the next
generation of dental assistants with a passion for service and track record of teamwork and
leadership. Many alumni of the scholarship program have expanded their career in health care,
becoming partners or managers at dental offices across the country.
